I finished this picture in August 2018. It is a new idea. The square and rectangles are added in pencil on the raw canvas in no particular order as though they were blown by the wind. But the work in the picture is very demanding once the painting begins. All the shapes have to be isolated with masking tape and because I love to use oil paint I have to wait until the paint is dry before starting neighbouring shapes. I am very pleased the way the colours enhance each other and add movement to the painting. It’s an idea I will continue to develop. AW

This painting was completed in 2014. The idea is to create a sense of depth and space and rhythm with stationary green islands on a yellow background. The orange bars were originally dark grey and the painting hung in my studio for a number of years until realised that they needed to be orange to provide the effect I was trying to get. After the change the painting came alive.
